I once worked in Saskatchewan and was offered the opportunity to interview Mike before he wandered to his lake property in northern Sask at the end of the 2013 season. It was a big deal for me - I was a fledgling broadcaster, he had already earned his plethora of accolades, and I'm a hockey nut. This was cool.
He sits down, probably smells the nerves in me, and just *gets* you with his presence. I told him about one of my prized possessions, a Winter Classic '09 Red Wings #13 Datsyuk jersey. He's my favourite player, after all.
Without missing a beat, he has me run and grab my cell phone. He puts his number in it and tells me that if I'm ever out in Winnipeg, Calgary, or Edmonton during an away game for the Wings, to drop him a line, and he'll get it signed for me.
I still have that number in my phone, six years on. I'm sure he no longer uses the Detroit line, but it's the sentiment that matters.
I never ended up getting out to any of those cities to get the jersey signed, but the thought's what counted to me.
Thanks for everything, Babs. I'm rocking the Babsocks for one last time today, then getting them dry-cleaned and framed up in the man-cave. Probably right beside the Datsyuk jersey.
