I’ve seen a lot of “I’m down in the dumps, I want to leave” posts lately and I just wanna say something to everyone going through a rough patch in their lives right now.
I’m not gonna go on the whole ‘it gets better, it could be worse, etc’ spiel, because we’ve all heard it at some point in our lives. In short it does, and it could be.
Traveling next-to-aimlessly can be therapeutic and provide a lot of perspective. There’s absolutely nothing wrong with sticking around somewhere for awhile, just as there’s nothing wrong with wandering.
So you want to leave your situation and start vagabonding? ask yourself these questions;
What do you have to gain from leaving? what could you do/learn traveling that you couldn’t where you are?
Are you homeless?
Are you prepared to be homeless? I don’t just mean sleeping outside regularly, I mean being subjected to everything being without a home entails, the cops especially, but lot of people who think they have power or leverage over you (i.e store owners)will hassle you more, Some people will look down on you for whatever personal issues they have with homelessness, but almost as many people will be very kind, generous and interested in the prospects of being a vagabond.
How much money could you save before you left, and is it enough to live more or less comfortably as long as you need to straighten things out?
What will you do when you’re out of money?
I’m 26 and I have to get out of here. I’m miserable. Everyday I wake up and think about killing myself. I’ve got no friends. I’ve got no family I can count on. I’ve been screwed by almost every employer I’ve had, including the most recent of which prompted me to make this post. I’m learning software engineering from free courses online so I’ll have some kind of skill besides basic carpentry. I don’t know what to do anymore. I could try joining the army I guess, but I don’t necessarily want that. I know it’s no one else’s problem to solve my problems. I just don’t know what to do anymore.
Edit: Wow, this blew up! Thank you everyone for your responses. I am still reading through everything, and I will DM those of you that mentioned getting in contact!
I’m planning a hitchhiking trip to get to the west coast from the southeast. Planning to end somewhere in California. I’d like to see more of the US but it would be cool to have a travel buddy to watch my bag if I use the bathroom. Message me if you’re interested (:
