When our friends make mistakes, don't succeed, or struggle (socially, academically, etc), we are usually quick to be supportive with words and/or actions. "Don't worry, you've got this," or "I know you can do it," and "just because you didn't pass your chem final doesn't mean you're a bad person" are easy to say to others and we do it often without a moment's hesitation. However, when we fail or make mistakes we are never that kind to ourselves. So next time you don't meet your own expectations (or others') think about what you would say to your best friend and say it to yourself. Out loud.
